From Fine Art to Fashion
Hi everyone! I'm Tanya Sheikh, the founder of Brand By. My journey into the fashion world may seem unconventional, but it's been a wild and exciting ride.
Growing up, I was immersed in the world of art, thanks to my paternal grandmother and aunt. My grandmother was a very well known artist in Pakistan, she studied at London School of Arts and became the first female department chair of the art department at Punjab University, which led me to spend each summer going to Pakistan to learn how to refine my talents. Their influence led me to pursue a degree in fine art at Providence College, which I completed with honors. However, my love for fashion design always simmered beneath the surface and would later become my preferred canvas.
After graduating, I moved to New York City with dreams of becoming a designer, but that was halted after learning the hard way how difficult it was to become a designer without formal training from a fashion design school. I wasn’t going to give up though, so I decided to find another way in. My early career involved working in prestigious showrooms, where I gained invaluable experience in the industry. Eventually, after being laid off in 2009 because of the financial crisis, $1000 in the bank, and my big dreams, I opened my own showroom and launched the In Support Of boutique a few years later, which garnered recognition from top fashion publications like New York Magazine’s Top 10 Retailers in NYC, Elle, WWD, Harper’s Bazaar, Domino, Apartment Therapy, Refinery 29, Tory Burch Foundation, and many more.
The Birth of Brand By
The changing retail landscape and the COVID-19 pandemic forced me to close my boutique, but it also presented a new opportunity. During the lockdown, I began experimenting with dyeing t-shirts and hoodies, creating unique graphic prints. The positive response to my designs from my community inspired me to formally launch Brand By.
Our Mission
Brand By is more than just a clothing brand; it's a platform for self-expression and individuality. Our mission is to empower people to embrace their unique style and challenge traditional gender norms. Our unisex dyed sweatsuit sets and graphic tees are crafted with high-quality materials and feature eye-catching prints that are both bold and wearable.
A Blend of Art and Fashion
My background in fine art has significantly influenced Brand By. Our designs are a fusion of art and fashion, combining intricate details and bold patterns. We believe that clothing should be a form of self-expression, and our pieces are designed to inspire confidence and creativity. Furthermore, as community is at the core of the brand, we also collaborate with different artists to create prints that compliment each collection, creating wearable art. We believe that clothing and personal style is an artform to be celebrated as we are our own personal canvas that we paint each day before we go out into the world.
